Chronological usage of the term 'Salaf'

In the tape "Love of the Salaf is a Sign of the Sunnah," student Abu Ri'aayah 'Abdur-Razzaq brought an athaar of Anas ibn Malik (radiallaahu 'anhu), who said:

...Allaah will protect him and make [his] heart inclined to the Salaf-us-Saleh. He asks Allaah for their way, he follows their way, embarks on their path, and that Allaah will increase them in reward... in sha` Allaah.
