After hearing contradicting reports regarding the day of 'Ashoorah falling on either Monday or Tuesday (5th/6th), our brother Abu Abdil Ghafoor contacted Shaykh Luhaydaan haadifhahullaah in Riyaadh. The Shaykh advised that everyone who wishes to fast the 9th/10th of Muharram and also avoid any differing in this issue, should fast this Sunday,Monday and Tuesday (4th,5th & 6th Dec '11).

Beware of The Innovations On The Day of Ashoorah

Shaikh Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) was asked about that which the people do on the day of Ashoorah, (such) as wearing kuhl, taking a bath, applying henaa, greeting one another, cooking grains, merry making and other than that etc.

    He (rahimahullaah) said:

No authentic hadeeth has been transmitted from the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) or from the sahaabah about these (actions). Neither the Imaams of the Muslims nor the four Imaams have (said that such actions) are desirable. And none of the people whose books are relied upon (due to their authenticity) have narrated any of that, neither an authentic nor weak (narration) from the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and the Sahaabah or from other than them about these (actions that are carried out by the people on the day of Ashooraa)…….

Then he (rahimahullaah) spoke about the fitnah that emerged as a result of the unjust killing of Husayn (radiyallaahu-anhu) and said:

''So there emerged an ignorant and transgressing group (and they are the Shia Rawaafid); they are either disbelieving hypocrites or misguided straying ones. They manifested a (so called) allegiance to the Prophet’s household and took Ashoorah as a day of mourning, sadness and wailing. They manifest the acts of the days of pre-Islamic ignorance (on this day of Ashoorah) by slapping the cheeks, tearing their clothes and call to the slogans of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance. These (acts) are from that which the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) forbade in his saying: ‘’He is not from us, he who slaps his cheeks, tears his cloths and calls to the slogans of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.
