The Hanifi Scholars Clarify False Beliefs of The Grave Worshippers

    Al-'Allaama Al-Aloosee (rahimahullaah) stated:

Indeed, it has been reported in a hadeeth whose authenticity is agreed upon, that: You (Muslims) will follow the ways of those who came before you step by step, so much so that if they were to enter the hole of lizard, you will enter it.

Therefore, he (salallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) stated that there will be amongst his Ummah those who will follow the footsteps of the previous nations, the (ways) of the pre-Islamic people of the Scripture and other than them, as has been explained in this hadeeth.

There is no doubt that what he (salallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) stated has taken place. There is no escape from it, because he is the truthful one, the one who is believed and he does not speak of his own desires. And of a surety those who cling to his guidance and follow his Sunnah are not the ones intended in this hadeeth due to what has been reported in (another) hadeeth about the sects, that they (i.e. those who cling to the Sunnah of the Messenger) are the saved sect and the ones upon that which the Messenger and his companions were upon.

Therefore, it must be that those who follow the footsteps of the (Jews and Christians) are the ones who have substituted and distorted (the religion) and (they are the ones) who innovated and deviated. They imitated the actions and deeds of those who have preceded with respect to building places and Masaajid upon the graves of their righteous people and calling upon them in times of important (events), distressful (situations), and other than that of that which the Jews, the Christians and the idol worshippers used to do. This (act of polytheism of the Jews, Christians and idol worshippers) has been reported in the authentic ahaadeeth.

The extremists and innovators of grave worship have a share of the characteristics of the pre-Islamic people of the scripture and the idol worshippers with respect to following their ways, footstep by footstep. We will mention some of this as a clear example of what we are discussing.

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

    Al-Allaamah Aloosee (rahimahullaah) continued…….

And amongst the traits of the people of the era of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance is that:

They used to carry out worship whilst associating the righteous people as partners to Allaah in worship. They regarded this to be an elevation of the (righteous people) which Allaah loves. Also they intended (through this worship of the righteous people) to get closer to Allaah and to attain success by seeking their intercession; because they thought that the (righteous people) were pleased with them for carrying out such acts. Indeed, the Qur’aan has informed us of this trait of theirs, and He (The Most High) said:

‘’Verily, We have sent down the Book to you (O Muhammad) in truth: So worship Allah (Alone) by doing reli-gious deeds sincerely for Allah’s sake only, (and not to show-off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship). Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya’ (protec-tors and helpers) besides Him (say): “We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah.” Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever.’’ [1]

Their worship of the righteous people was that they supplicated to them and sought their needs from them. They slaughtered sacrifices, vowed and gave oaths for the sake of the (righteous people). Allaah (The Most High) said:

”And they worship besides Allah things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Say: “Do you inform Allah of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?” Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him!’’ [2]

This is the greatest affair in which the Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) opposed them. (That is) because he (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) came with the religion of Ikhlaas (i.e. to purify one’s worship for Allaah alone), and he informed them that this is the religion of Allaah besides which no other religion is accepted. He (informed them) that whoever does what he (merely) deems to be correct, then indeed Allaah will forbid him from entry into paradise and the fire of hell will be his destination. This (sincerity in worshipping Allaah alone) is what the entire religion is (based upon); and because of it, the people are divided into Muslims and disbelievers; and because of it there occurred enmity between the people and Jihaad was legislated. Allaah (The Most High) said:

‘’And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone.’’ [3]

And that which is well known is that the extremist (soofees and worshippers of graves) have an ample share of this trait of those who preceded them (in worship of the righteous people and the graves). This has been witnessed.

And amongst the traits of the people of the era of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance is that their religion was founded upon fundamental principles, and amongst the greatest of these (principles) was blind following. This was a great principle of the earlier nations before the advent of Islaam. Allaah (The Most High) said:

‘’And similarly, We sent not a warner before you (O Muhammad) to any town (people) but the luxurious ones among them said: “We found our fathers following a certain way and religion, and we will indeed follow their footsteps. (The warner) said: “Even if I bring you better guidance than that which you found your fathers fol-lowing?” They said: “Verily, We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent.” [4]

So, Allaah commanded them to follow the truth. He (The Most High) said:

‘’[Say (O Muhammad) to these idolaters (pagan Arabs) of your folk:] Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad’s Sunnah), and follow not any Auliya’ (protectors and helpers, etc. who order you to associate partners in worship with Allah), besides Him (Allah). Little do you remember!’’ [5]

And He (The Most High) said:

‘’When it is said to them: “Follow what Allah has sent down.” They say: “Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following.” (Would they do that!) Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided?’’[6] and (other) verses of the (Qur’aan) showing that the people of the era of pre-Islamic era of ignorance were led through blind following. They neither made any judgements by way of contemplation and examination nor did they busy themselves in reflecting over the affairs. So due to this, they wandered astray in the burden of ignorance and settled their lives upon misguidance.

Likewise, the extremist (soofees and worshippers of graves) blindly follow their fore fathers in these customs. It is not possible to turn them away from these (customs) even if manifest signs appeared to them. Your discussion with their men of common sense increases them in nothing but in turning away. They are haughty in the presence of the truth and are deluded.

So if you were to (seek after) the similarities between the people of the era of pre-Islamic ignorance and the extremist soofees-the worshippers of graves, you will find a clear similarity which is clearly manifested to every possessor of two eyes.

    To be continued…..Inshaa-Allaah

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikh Raslaan (may Allaah preserve him) said:

Making vows to the dead regarding spending (one’s wealth) and other than it; offering sacrificial slaughters by a grave; seeking intercession through it and (seeking) ones needs from that are the very same things the pre-Islamic people of ignorance used to do. They used to perform these (acts) for those things they gave the names ‘Wa-than-engraved images’ and ‘Sanam-idols’; whilst the grave worshippers perform these (acts) to what they call ‘Waliy-friend of Allaah’, ‘Qabr-Grave’ and ‘Mash-had ‘holy site’.

And neither do names have an influence nor do they change meanings by way of what language, common sense and the legislated texts necessitate; for indeed the one who drinks alcohol and calls it water has not drank anything else except alcohol, and he is punished with the punishment given to the one who drank alcohol. And perhaps the punishment for him is increased due to the deceit and lies (he utilized in giving that false name to the alcohol).

And Iblees (may the curse of Allaah be upon him) was the first one who gave praiseworthy names to a thing that incurred the Anger of Allaah and was an act of disobedience to Him (The Most High); because (Allaah said that Iblees said to the father of mankind Aadam): ”O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?” [Tahaa: 120] So, he (Iblees) named the tree which Allaah forbade Aadam to approach ‘The Tree of Eternity’……
