Scholarly Advice to Callers on how to Implement ayah 125 of Surat An-Nahl

Shaikh Taraaheeb Ad-Dawsiree (hafidhahullaah) - during his visit to Philadelphia over a decade ago - said those callers upon baseerah should use hikma (wisdom) in giving da'wah to one who wants good, loves good, but is ignorant of good: so you tell him the salat (prayer) is like this and its reward is like this, siyam (fasting) is like this and its reward is like this, and so forth.

The shaikh said the caller should use al-Maw'idhatil-Hasanah (admonition, fair preaching) to one who is lazy, laxed, short in doing good, whose desire for good is little, whose desire for evil is stronger: so it is not enough that you call him to good, like the first type. For this type, you must also remind him with admonition, and the fear of Allaah, and the bad results of evil.

The shaikh said the caller should jadilhum bil-lati hiya ahsan (argue in a way that is best) with those who turn away from good, running towards evil, supporting evil, have become an obstacle toward that which is good, and pushes (calls to) evil. So the Shaikh said that it is not enough to call this person with what you called the first two. In addition, you must argue in a way that is best, explain the falsehood he is upon, remove his doubts, and support the truth with evidences.

Then the shaikh said this is the meaning of the 125th ayah of Surat an-Nahl:

    دْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِه ِِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ

Invite (mankind, oh Muhammad) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islaam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur`aan) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided. (An-Nahl, ayah 125)

Shaykh 'Abdur-Rahmaan bin Hasan Aali-Shaykh (d. 1285H, rahimahullaah) - the grandson of Shaykhul-Islaam Muhammad ibn 'Abdul-Wahhaab (d. 1206H, rahimahullaah) - also explained the application of this aforementioned ayah in his book Fat-h-ul-Majeed, which is an explanation of his grandfather's book Kitaab-ut-Tawheed.

Shaykh 'Abdur-Rahmaan Aali-Shaykh narrated the statement of Imaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzeeyah (d. 751H, rahimahullaah) that the people who are being called to al-Islaam and to the Da'wah of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah are of three categories.

The first category consists of those people who are looking and searching for the truth, and when they find the truth, they accept it. So these people are called to the path of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa) with Hikmah (wisdom). So the first part of the verse: invite to the Way of your Lord with wisdom, then Ibnul-Qayyim has said that this is in regards to those category of people who are searching and looking for the truth, and when they find the truth they hold onto it.

And the second category consists of those people who are confused and have mixed up between truth and falsehood, but when they hear the truth, they accept it and follow it. So this group is called to Allaah by Maw'idhatil-Hasanah (admonition, fair preaching). And fair preaching means calling them by telling them and instilling fear in them regarding the punishment of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa) for the ones who disobey Him, and the abode of this type of people, which is the Hellfire, and giving them the good news that those who obey Allaah and His Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) will have the glad tidings of the Paradise. So this is the second category of people, those who are involved in evil, and in falsehood, and in other than al-Islaam, but when they hear about the truth and learn the truth, then they follow it. So these people are reminded of the punishment of Allaah, and reminded of the Mercy of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala).

And the third category consists of those people who are arrogant, those who know the truth and have heard about the truth, but they have arrogance and they turn away, so this person is to be called to Allaah with jadilhum bil-lati hiya ahsan (argue in a way that is best). And this is the last part of the verse from Sooratun-Nahl.

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
