The True Scholars & The Virtues

Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, said (what means): Allaah bears witness that La ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped except He), and the angels, and those having knowledge who are upright and just (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. La ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped except He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. (Alee 'Imraan, ayah 18)

Shaikh 'Ubaid ibn 'Abdullaah al-Jaabiree (hafidhahullaah 'ala as-Sunnah) said about this ayah:
    Those bearing witness are three:
1- Al-Haqq (Allaah, Himself), and this is sufficient.
    2- The noble angels.
3- People of knowledge -------> This is a tazkiyah for them.

Allaah, The Most High, said (what means): It is only the 'Ulemma among His slaves who fear Allaah... (Faatir, ayah 28) The people of knowledge have explained that this fear is a complete fear, meaning as He (Allaah) should be feared.

Abu Dardaa` (radiAllaahu 'anhu) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) say: Whoever follows a path to seek knowledge, Allaah will show him the way to Paradise. The angels lower their wings being pleased with the one who seeks knowledge. Whoever is in the heavens and on earth, even the fish in the sea, ask for forgiveness for the scholar. The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like that of the moon over all other heavenly bodies. The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets, for the Prophets did not leave behind Deenars and Dirhams, but they left behind knowledge. And whoever receives it, receives an abundance of good fortune. [Ahmad, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, rahimahumullaah; authentic]

Shaikh al-Jaabiree said: In this hadeeth, there are six virtues and characteristics of the people of knowledge:

1- The Promise of Jannah, wherein is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and has never come across the heart of mankind.
2- The angels are pleased with the seeker of knowledge, traveling to seek knowledge, and teaching people that knowledge.
3- All the creation seeks forgiveness for them, even the fish on the bottom of the ocean.
4- The superiority of the scholars over everyone else. They worship Allaah upon baseerah, and teach people through actions upon baseerah.
5- The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets; this is only for the scholars. The Prophets ('alayhimu salaam) did not leave anything behind except 'ilm.
6- Have diligence in seeking 'ilm, and acting upon and teaching the Sunnah, disseminating knowledge, refuting bid'ah.

The scholars are rewarded for their 'ilm, and the 'ilm of those they teach, and the actions of those who act upon it, because the Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: 'Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all. And whoever calls to misguidance will carry the burden of the sin similar to the sin of the one who follows him, without the sins of either of them being lessened at all.' [Muslim]

In his sharh (explanation) of the hadeeth narrated by Abu Dardaa` (radiAllaahu 'anhu), Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (d. 751H, rahimahullaah) said: "The last the Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) mentioned in the hadeeth is the condition of this hadeeth..." All the virtues are for (Warath al-Anbiyaa`), those who inherit from the Prophets ('alayhimu salaam). This is not for any scholar except for the one who inherits from the Prophets. So the one who inherits his knowledge from Ahlul-Bid'ah, this is not a scholar.

The true, genuine scholars are those who inherit the knowledge of the Sharee'ah (Legislation), believe in the Sharee'ah, implement and precisely relay the Sharee'ah that Allaah revealed to His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) who perfectly conveyed it to the sahaaba (radiAllaahu 'anhum) who precisely relayed it to the tabi'een. The genuine (Salafee) scholars relay the Sharee'ah without opposing or adding or covering up or watering down or compromising - and they do this without fearing the blame of the blamers. True knowledge is "Allaah said," "His Messenger said," "the sahaba said."

The Truth is Found in Every Age and the People of Truth are United Irrespective of Time, Era and Place

Read this mighty statement from Abu al-Qasim al-Asbahani (d. 535H, rahimahullaah) as found in al-Hujjah Fee Bayaan il-Mahajjah (2:224-225):

    Which translates:
And from what shows that the people of hadeeth [adhering to the Prophetic traditions in all affairs of the religion], they are the people of truth is that if you were to peruse all of their authored books, from their first to their last, the old and the recent, despite the variation in their cities [of residence] and their eras [in which they lived], and the [great] distance between them in their lands, with every single one of them residing in [his own] region amongst the regions, you will find them to be upon a single method, [in unison], upon a single way, traversing with it upon a path that they do not divert from, they do not incline [to anything else] whilst upon it. Their saying in that [path] is one, their action is one. You will not see difference between them, nor separation in anything, even if it may be insignificant. Rather, if you were to gather what has been [stated] upon their tongues, from that which they narrated from their predecessors, you will find as if it has come from a single heart, and has been [stated] upon a single tongue. And is there any evidence for the truth more clear than this?"
The 'aqeedah is the Foundation of Unity. From what has preceded, it should be abundantly clear that the true basis of unity is that very same pristine pure 'aqeedah that brought together and united the hearts of the Companions (radiAllaahu 'anhum). Any call to rectification or any da'wah that is based upon other than this foundation, or ignores this foundation, or wishes to unite Muslims whilst the foundations of the house have huge cracks and splits and flaws is greatly misguided in his or her action, and is attempting to achieve the impossible.

    Note:
    * Uwais al-Qarnee is a mukhadram(a person who accepted Islaam in the time of the Prophet, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, but did not meet him in person) and his rank is between that (of the outright) companions and that (of the outright) tabi'oon.

Note: If you notice any errors or discrepencies, or the same scholar mentioned more than once, or you know of a missing date of death, please advise - may Allaah bless you.

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
